We work at Rift Valley Academy, a Christian boarding school located in central Kenya. The Academy, a branch of Africa Inland mission International, exists to provide a quality education in a nurturing environment for the children of missionaries serving in Africa. With over 100 years of rich history, RVA has played an instrumental role in the lives of countless MKs (missionary kids). The current student body of about 450 includes more than 20 different nationalities. The families these students represent serve with 80 mission organizations in over 20 African countries. Our roles there change from year to year but this is what we did while we were there for 4 years. Together we taught Sunday School classes & were Sponsors of the Class of 2009 from 9th grade through 12th grade. That meant that on weekends we organized games & food for them. We also took part in a weekly prayer breakfast every Wednesday that was open to anyone in the class to attend. Another role was to help fundraise for the annual Jr./Sr. Banquet and then the Senior Safari, which involves a trip by bus to the coast and 5 days of vacation at a nice hotel.
Jeff's other responsibilities included:
- Teaching various Science classes (7th Grade Life Science, 8th Grade Earth Science, Biology) and also Kiswahili to 9th - 12th graders)
- Coaching sports (boys volleyball & rugby, boys & girls soccer)
- Bus driver (for sporting events but also to take students to & from the airport in Nairobi)
Kate's ministry involved:
- Teaching piano to several students each week
- Running Special Education for the elementary-age kids during our first year there
- Travel Coordinator for all out-of-country students,which involves keeping passports & visas up-to-date, arranging flights, picking students up
and getting staff volunteers to drive vans & buses.
